Elvis Costello & the Attractions in London, 1980

Elvis Costello & The Attractions at Hope & Anchor, London – May 14, 1980

Early Elvis Costello shows are often pretty riveting sets. Switching effortless between punk and new wave, to jazz, country and pop, the man clearly loves and has a thorough understanding of many different genres of music. Here’s an interesting show from 1980, just after the release of his Stax/R&B based ‘Get Happy’ album. It’s interesting to note here that Elvis’ right hand man, keyboardist Steve Nieve, is missing from this show. Martin Belmont, the fantastic guitarist from Graham Parker & The Rumour steps up in his place. The dynamic of the two guitars works beautifully here given the clever arrangements of Costello’s own songs plus thoughtfully chosen covers including Marvin Gaye’s ‘One More Heartache’ and The Temptations’ ‘Don’t Look Back.’
