Medeski, Martin & Wood – Live in New York – November 1996

Medeski, Martin & Wood – Live at the Mandela Room, University Union, Binghamton, NY – November 2, 1996

Medeski, Martin & Wood have covered a lot of musical ground since their inception in 1993. For me, they were never better live than in the 1995-96 vintage. One of the best shows I ever saw was MMW at Tipitina’s in New Orleans as a college freshman, just prior to the release of their excellent Shack Man album (with a young and only locally known Galactic opening). They took the stage, tore into ‘Is There Anybody Here That Love My Jesus?’ and didn’t let up for over two hours. The packed house never stopped moving and grooving and the band hit peak after peak of intensity, culminating in a stomping cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Crosstown Traffic’ that sent everyone back the dorms in awe.

This show, recorded less than two months after the one I saw, captures the same intensity with a similar set list.  Medeksi, Martin & Wood had some fine outings after this one but were never quite as funky and fun in concert as they were during this era.
