THE ITALS AND ROOTS RADICS LIVE IN ARCATA, CA – 1983

The Itals w/ Roots Radics – Live at Humboldt County Garvest Festival, Arcata, CA – November 9, 1983

itals%20&%20roots%20radics

Here’s a highly recommended reggae show to kick off a mellow, Autumn Friday afternoon. This one reminds me of one of those prized, bootleg cassettes you had in college that you played to death but had that raw sound that suited the music perfectly! Check out it out and I think you’ll agree it’s nostalgic.

These guys wrote and sang some truly gorgeous songs and Roots Radics (recently featured here on the blog playing an outstanding show with Jimmy Cliff).

STEELY DAN FEATURING LARRY CARLTON LIVE IN CHICAGO – 2009

Steely Dan – Live at the Chicago Theatre, Chicago, IL – September 3, 2009

Steely Dan

Steely Dan hit the road in 2009 with a new concept; book 3 nights in each city on the tour, run through an entire album for two nights and feature an all request show on night 3. This show – the first on their Chicago stop – features the band opening with The Royal Scam album in its entirety. This proved to be an extra special night though as their longtime studio right hand man, Larry Carlton, joined them onstage for the duration to pepper the songs with his signature tone and style. The reunion was clearly appreciated by this luck audience and then band sounds as if they’re having a lot of fun.

LED ZEPPELIN LIVE IN FORT WORTH, TX – 1977

Led Zeppelin – Live at Tarrant County Convention Center, Fort Worth, TX – May 22, 1977

NP-LedZeppelin16

Judging from recordings of their live shows, Led Zeppelin were hit-or-miss on stage. This was particularly true in the mid to late ’70s after fame and hard living were beginning to take their toll on the group, particularly Jimmy Page and John Bonham. The band toured North America in 1977 shortly after the release of their penultimate studio album, Presence, and the dark and mysterious vibe of that record carried over into the live shows  They ran quite long with a brief acoustic set placed in between the electric portions. The Ft. Worth concert offered here is from one of the best nights of the tour. John Bonham is really playing extraordinarily and pushing the rest of the band to similar heights. Highlights include the opening trifecta of ‘The Song Remains The Same’, Sick Again’ and ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’, a sublime version of ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’, a lengthy ‘No Quarter’ (with a rowdy, John Paul Jones-led romp through Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker), the excellent acoustic set and a great cover of Jerry Lee Lewis’ ‘It’ll Be Me’ featuring Mick Ralphs from Bad Company on guitar.

JOHN LEE HOOKER LIVE IN CHICAGO – 1976

John Lee Hooker – Wise Fools Pub, Chicago, IL – November 9, 1976

John Lee Hooker

Here’s John Lee Hooker laying down some nasty blues/boogie in front of a very enthusiastic Chicago audience. Hooker and his band are clearly feeding off the energy in the room and turn in a blazing performance in return. It’s obvious from listening that the room is quite small and one can imagine how exciting it must have been watching a blues legend work his magic in such an intimate setting.

JIMMY CLIFF LIVE IN CHICAGO – NOVEMBER 1978

Jimmy Cliff – Live at Park West, Chicago, IL – November 11, 1978

OAKLAND - 1979: Jimmy Cliff performs live at The Paramount Theatre in 1979 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Richard McCaffrey/ Michael Ochs Archive/ Getty Images)

This latest share is a smoldering set by reggae legend Jimmy Cliff. He is supported here by The Roots Radics and guitar virtuoso Ernest Ranglin, giving his sound an edgier and slightly darker feel than his studio work of the time. Cliff and the group lock in on the first beat of the opening song and keep the ferocious grooves going through the sublime triple closing sequence of songs from ‘The Harder They Come.” This gem was originally broadcast on WXRT-FM in Chicago and was recently re-aired in HD-FM.

WEATHER REPORT LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA, PA – 1974

Weather Report– Live at Unknown Venue, Philadelphia, PA – December 8, 1974

Joe Zawinul

Recorded at an unknown venue, presumably for a radio broadcast, this lineup of Weather Report features Joe Zawinul on keys, Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Dom Um Romao on percussion, Alphonso Johnson on bass and Chester Thompson on drums. Captured on tour in support of their ‘Mysterious Traveller’ album, this effort found the group incorporating liberal uses of funk, R&B grooves, and rock into their signature sound.

BOB DYLAN & THE BAND LIVE IN BOSTON, MA – 1974

Bob Dylan & The Band – Live at Boston Garden, Boston, MA – January 14, 1974 (Afternoon Show)

02_Bob_Dylan_&_The_Band_1974

Bob Dylan & The Band reunited for a triumphant concert tour in 1974 after their last outing in 1966 garnered less than favorable reviews (although the music was often spectacular). Here is most of the afternoon show from the Boston stop on the tour which finds the band engaged, tight and powerful.

JERRY GARCIA BAND LIVE IN WATERBURY, CT – 1977

Jerry Garcia Band – Live at the Palace Theatre, Waterbury, CT – November 23, 1977

garcia

Recorded during a break from The Grateful Dead in the late Fall of 1977, this incantation of the Jerry Garcia Band features the lineup that had just completed the ‘Cats Under The Stars’ album (Jerry, John Kahn, Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux, Maria Muldaur and Buzz Buchanan). Several tracks from that album are played here in versions that surpass their studio counterparts. Standard JGB faves like ‘That’s What Love Will Make You Do’ and ‘Mystery Train’ sound are also given spirited treatments as well.

BOB DYLAN & TOM PETTY – LIVE USA TOUR 1986 & BOSTON ’76 RADIO PROMO

Bob Dylan & Tom Petty – Live USA Tour 1986 & Boston ’76 Radio Promo

Tom-Petty-and-Bob-Dylan-Great-Woods-1986

Fans of Dylan and Petty will find much to like about this set recorded for Westwood One’s ‘In Concert’ series back in 1986. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers back Dylan on an eclectic mix of classic hits and deeper cuts. Petty also takes the lead on excellent versions of The Byrds’ ‘So You Want To Be A Rock ‘n Roll Star’ and ‘Breakdown.’

Also included as a bonus is a copy of the long out of print ‘Official Live Leg’ distributed to FM stations across the country back in 1977. These tracks feature Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers along with keyboardist Al Kooper performing live at Paul’s Mall in Boston, MA in December 1976.

ERIC CLAPTON – LIVE IN BELFAST, IRELAND, 2004

Eric Clapton – Live at Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Ireland – April 24, 2004

Clapton

Eric Clapton’s tours of 2004 and 2006 found him playing a mix of hits and deep tracks with a renewed vigor. Hi first-rate group included Billy Preston on organ (who would make his last appearance on stage before succumbing to kidney disease in 2006) and Doyle Bramhall II (from The Arc Angels) on second guitar. Robert Randolph, who had been opening for Clapton that year, joins on the encores and raises the energy even higher.

*There is some BBC intro music and announcements during the intro to the first track, ‘Let It Rain.’ Be patient as they go away quickly.
